7 December 2025 – 4 January 2026
The Month of the Rat marks the deepest point of winter within the Chinese metaphysical calendar. While the Western calendar considers 21 December as the beginning of winter, the Chinese perspective views this moment as its absolute peak.
The Winter Solstice represents the strongest Yin of the entire year, and precisely at this turning point, the Qi begins to shift.
In the Chue Style Feng Shui tradition, the Winter Solstice signifies the energetic beginning of the new year. With this turning, the Qi transitions into the Year of the Horse. Before exploring the annual dynamics, it is essential to understand the qualities that the Rat brings into this month.
Characteristics of the Rat
The Rat is known for its intelligence, adaptability, and creative thought. It offers a fertile ground for new ideas, communication, and networking. This makes the month favourable for conceptual work, initiating conversations, and exploring fresh approaches.
However, the Rat tends to begin many things at once without completing them. This can lead to scattered focus or energy depletion. Awareness and prioritisation are therefore essential this month. The decision-making style of the Rat may appear inconsistent or unpredictable. As a result, behaviour—both personally and in the world at large—can feel less transparent. Situations may arise in which actions seem irrational or difficult to interpret. This should not be viewed as a sign of instability but rather as a typical expression of the Rat’s complex inner dynamics.
Furthermore, the Rat often lacks natural courage and relies on external reassurance. If periods of hesitation or internal doubt arise, this is aligned with the month’s energy and usually resolves as the Rat’s influence diminishes in early February.
Interaction of Elements: Yang Earth and Yin Water
This Rat month is accompanied by Yang Earth, creating an elemental pairing that shapes the overall atmosphere.
Yin Water (Rat) behaves like mist or fog—subtle, detailed, fluid, and sometimes elusive. Yang Earth resembles a mountain—solid, slow-moving, and clear in structure.
Together, they form the image of fog gathering around a mountain. This means:
Water does not overflow or become overwhelming, because Earth contains and channels it. Clarity may be temporarily obscured, much like a landscape hidden by mist. Insight emerges once the fog settles, revealing structures and details that were previously unseen. This elemental interaction encourages patience. Many matters become clearer only when allowed to rest rather than when forced forward.
Energetic Shift After the Winter Solstice
From 21 December onward, the Qi gradually turns toward the new year. As it moves into the Year of the Horse, a natural tension arises between the energies of the Rat and the Horse. These two branches stand in direct opposition within the Chinese zodiac.
This can manifest as:
- heightened irritability
- increased potential for disagreements
- emotional or mental tension
- a tendency to focus on the shortcomings of others
- reactive communication
In such periods, conflicts can easily escalate. When possible, it is advisable to postpone important decisions or discussions for approximately two weeks. In the following Month of the Ox, matters can be addressed with significantly greater ease and stability.
Flying Stars: Monthly Influences in the Home
The monthly Star 1 (Water) enters the centre of the home. However, because the annual Star 2 (Earth) occupies the centre throughout 2025, the Water of Star 1 initially appears “muddy” – like water mixed with soil, unable to flow freely.
Earth controls Water, creating heaviness and stagnation. Only through the introduction of the Metal element can this Water be clarified and set in motion again. Metal acts as a filter, separating the “mud” and restoring the quality of the Water.
Suitable Metal enhancers include a singing bowl, a gong, a round white vase or a bowl of coins.
In the second half of the month after Winter Solstice, as the new annual Star 1 gradually moves into the centre, the Water becomes clearer. Only then does the supportive nature of Star 1 fully unfold:
Financial possibilities may emerge and should be considered carefully. The influence becomes even stronger when the main entrance is located in the South or Southwest, combining the monthly energy with career or entrepreneurial strength.
North and Northeast – Challenging Energies
These sectors receive energies that may create tension, physical strain, or interpersonal friction. To harmonise these areas, the Water element is recommended:
- fresh flowers in a blue or green vase
- tall, upright forms or flowing, wave-like designs (such as Aalto-inspired vases)
This balances the Qi and encourages smoother movement in these directions.
Preparation for the Winter Solstice
As the Qi begins its annual transition after the solstice, this period marks a natural moment of reset. To align with this shift, it is beneficial to:
- declutter thoroughly before 21 December
- purify the home through gentle incense or herbal smoke on the morning of the solstice
- invite fresh Qi into the space during the late evening or night
This prepares the environment—and the individual—for the energetic turning into the Year of the Horse.
Summary of Key Recommendations
- Focus on completing ongoing projects rather than starting too many new ones.
- Expect some irregular or unclear decision-making around you; this is typical for the Rat’s influence.
- Allow clarity to emerge naturally instead of forcing immediate insight.
- Avoid confrontational discussions after the solstice; consider postponing important matters until the Month of the Ox.
- Support opportunities by activating Star 1 in the centre with Metal objects.
- Harmonise the North and Northeast with Water or Wood elements such as fresh flowers.
- Prepare the home for the new Qi by decluttering and performing a purification ritual on the Winter Solstice.
