7 August – 6 September 2026 | Yang Fire Monkey
The Monkey month marks the beginning of autumn in the Chinese calendar. At first, that may sound strange. In many parts of Europe, August still feels like high summer. It is hot, dry, and the landscape often looks more scorched than autumnal.
And yet, something is already changing. I notice this every year: there is a moment in August when the air feels different. The light changes, evenings become slightly cooler, and nature slowly begins to withdraw. This is exactly where we are now.
The first days of the month still carry some of the Earth energy of the year, marking the transition from Yang towards Yin. Then the Monkey brings in Metal – an element that has been rather weak throughout 2026.
At the same time, the heavenly stem of the month is Yang Fire. So once again, Fire is strong.
More Fire in the Fire Horse Year
2026 is already a very Fire-dominated year. From the perspective of the Five Elements, Fire is strong while Metal and Water – the elements that could cool, structure and balance this energy – are comparatively weak.
We can see a similar quality reflected in nature: heat, drought, dry vegetation and wildfires have shaped large parts of the European summer. Of course, climate science looks at these developments through the lens of long-term climate change. Chinese metaphysics offers another layer of observation: cyclical patterns of years, months and seasons.
For me, these perspectives do not need to compete with each other. The Chinese calendar simply gives us another way of noticing when certain qualities become stronger, weaker or begin to change.
And now, with the Monkey month, Metal finally returns.
The Monkey Brings the Beginning of Autumn
The Monkey belongs to the element of Metal and traditionally opens the autumn season. That does not mean temperatures suddenly drop. The shift starts much earlier and more subtly. Nature begins to withdraw. Leaves may change, plants start conserving energy, and the strong outward Yang movement of summer slowly begins to turn inward.
This is one of the reasons I love the 24 Qi Phases of the Chinese calendar. They invite us to observe nature closely instead of waiting for a fixed date on a Western calendar. The current dryness also affects agriculture. Smaller harvests, stressed fruit trees and reduced yields can eventually influence availability and prices. This is where the elemental language of the calendar becomes very practical: what looks abstract on paper can eventually show up in our gardens, farms and even supermarket shelves.
Fire Meets Metal
The arrival of Metal is generally helpful this year. Metal is connected with structure, clarity and organisation, and within the wider energetic picture of 2026 it can also support themes around money, finances, economic stability and institutions.
However, Yang Fire sits above the Monkey. And Fire controls Metal. So the Metal energy is present, but it is under pressure. This may create a month in which financial or structural topics begin to stabilise, but not necessarily in a calm or predictable way.
The Monkey can also speed things up in 2026. Developments may happen quickly. Decisions can suddenly gain momentum, and opportunities or challenges may appear faster than expected.
Opportunities in the Monkey Month
Every Earthly Branch carries certain opportunities and challenges depending on the energy of the year. How strongly you personally benefit always depends on your own BaZi chart. If Metal supports your chart, you may experience the more positive qualities of the month more clearly. If Metal is less supportive for you, it is worth paying closer attention to the risks.
One potential theme of the Monkey month is unexpected financial gain. This could be a new client, a refund, a sale, an opportunity or money arriving from an unexpected source. But there is another side to it: Money may come quickly – and leave just as quickly. So if something unexpected arrives, do not rush to spend it. Give that money a purpose first.
The Monkey also supports study, education and learning. If you have been thinking about starting a course, professional training or a new area of study, this can be a supportive month to begin.
The Two Qi Phases of the Monkey Month
Each Chinese month contains two Qi Phases, sometimes also described as climatic phases. Historically, farmers used these seasonal markers to understand the development of nature and adjust their work accordingly.
The first phase of the Monkey month is: Beginning of Autumn
This is the first clear movement from summer towards autumn. The weather may still be hot, but Yang slowly starts to withdraw while Yin begins to increase.
The second phase starts on 23 August: Limit of Heat. I particularly like this name. It describes that moment towards the end of August when the first cooler breeze suddenly appears. You may notice it in the evening air, in the changing light or simply in your body.
It always reminds me of the film Chocolat. The main character, Vianne, has a tendency to move on whenever the north wind arrives. There is something very fitting about that image. The wind signals change before we necessarily understand it intellectually.
Animals respond to these seasonal signals instinctively. Migrating birds do not need a calendar to know that autumn is approaching. We can develop that sensitivity too.
So this month, ask yourself: When do you first feel that autumn has arrived?
Useful Dates in the Monkey Month
Within every month, the Day Officers describe the quality of individual days. In August and early September, the Open and Close Days are particularly useful.
Important dates include:
- 12 August – Open
- 13 August – Close
- 5 September – Open
- 6 September – Close
Open Days are suitable for activities connected with opening, beginning and creating access – for example business launches or certain types of moving. Close Days are better suited to completing, ending and consciously closing something. You can find the detailed daily qualities in the Feng Shui Calendar.
Flying Stars in the Monkey Month
If you are new to Flying Stars: they describe another layer of time in Feng Shui. The energetic quality of different directions changes with the year and the month. This means some areas can be especially supportive at a certain time, while others benefit from more calm and attention.
Northeast and East: Learning and Career
The Northeast and East are supportive this month for:
- study
- teaching
- career development
- learning
- personal growth
These areas benefit from a small amount of Fire as a balancing element. A simple option is a vase with fresh red flowers. And most importantly: use the space. An activation has very little effect if the area remains completely unused.
North: Money and Finances
The North is particularly supportive for financial topics during the Monkey month. If you want to strengthen your relationship with money, begin by creating clarity here.
Declutter. Remove things you no longer need. Sort paperwork. Make space.
You could even use this area to review your finances, business numbers or financial planning. Sometimes the best Feng Shui adjustment is not adding something – but removing what no longer belongs there.
Challenging Directions: South and Southwest
The South and Southwest deserve more attention this month. Here, Flying Stars 5 and 7 interact. Both are considered more challenging stars, and their elemental qualities are additionally strengthened by the directions they occupy. This can increase the potential for:
- arguments
- misunderstandings
- restlessness
- damaged or broken items
- small issues escalating quickly
Pay particular attention if an entrance or frequently used room is located in one of these directions. Repair broken items quickly and keep these areas tidy. Avoid creating unnecessary activity or conflict here.
Blue can be used as a balancing colour. A dark blue vase with fresh flowers is a simple and elegant option.
Monkey Month 2026 in Short
The most important points for this month:
The beginning of autumn is already here.
Observe the subtle changes in light, air, nature and your own body.
Metal returns.
This can bring more structure to financial, economic and organisational matters.
Expect things to move quickly.
The Monkey can accelerate developments in 2026.
Use the month for learning.
Study, training and education are strongly supported.
Be mindful with unexpected money.
If money arrives suddenly, give it a purpose before spending it.
Clear the North.
This area can support financial matters during the month.
Use Northeast and East for study and career.
Keep South and Southwest calm and organised.
And perhaps the most interesting exercise of all: Go outside and observe. At what point do you first feel that summer is ending? Sometimes the body notices the change before the mind does.
